The Scholarship
The Lt. James W. Hotsinpiller, Jr. and Deputy United States Marshal Derek W. Hotsinpiller Memorial Scholarship is awarded to one or more seniors from the designated counties in WV with a 3.0 GPA who have been accepted to West Virginia college or university, and intend to major in criminal justice or another social science.
At the present, the designated counties are: Barbour, Berkeley, Braxton, Brooke, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Grant, Hampshire, Hancock, Hardy, Harrison, Jefferson, Lewis, Marion, Marshall, Mineral, Monongalia, Morgan, Ohio, Pendleton, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Ritchie, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Webster, and Wetzel.
Recipients can apply for renewal each semester for their four years of undergraduate studies. The Board decided to require all recipients who apply for renewal of their scholarship to meet the following criteria (which is based on the current Promise Scholarship guidelines) in order to be eligible. Recipients will be reminded of these requirements at the time of their original award:
- Be continuously enrolled as a full-time student.
- Maintain a 2.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale the first year and a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in subsequent years.
- Complete and earn a minimum of 30 credit hours in each 12-month period.
